This time-lag meant that the entire landscape could shift before a product reached the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, a lot of money and time was wasted building products that were no longer needed by the time they reached customers\u2019 hands. Software developers were understandably frustrated by this experience. And so, in 2001, a group of thought leaders from the software community came together and wrote the <a href=\"https:\/\/agilemanifesto.org\/principles.html\">Agile Manifesto<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11112\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11112 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tjarb.com\/limetech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pexels-kampus-production-5940841-e1621453497579-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"five adults smile around a library table with a laptop and two people high-five\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/@kampus\"><em>Photo credit<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Enter the Agile Manifesto<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/limetech.co\/a-glossary-of-agile-software-development-terminology-a-to-z\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile Manifesto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outlined a new set of principles to guide software development toward a more flexible, adaptable model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principles included statements such as \u201cOur highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software,\u201d \u201cWelcoming (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) changing requirements, even late in development,\u201d and \u201cWorking software is the primary measure of progress.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideas expressed in this document inspired a new approach to product development, one that involved a shift from a top-down, linear method of managing projects, to a data-driven, cyclical approach. This shift resulted in novel transformations in the world of software, and ultimately, the world of work at large.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Agile characteristics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what are the characteristics of <a href=\"https:\/\/limetech.co\/a-glossary-of-agile-software-development-terminology-a-to-z\/\">agile<\/a>? Here are the main points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile work is collaborative, with a focus on continual improvement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work progresses cyclically.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products are developed by cross-functional teams. Individual expertise in areas such as data, engineering, and design informs the process from the beginning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large projects are broken down into small steps. Work is produced in short increments, called iterations or sprints.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progress is reported frequently via daily and\/or weekly check-ins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work is oriented toward pleasing the customer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code is tested regularly\u2014usually at the end of each iteration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New directions are chosen to accommodate changing realities. The approach is adaptive and continuous.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11880 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/tjarb.com\/limetech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/eden-constantino-iJg1YzsEfqo-unsplash-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/>The agile advantage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the big advantages of <a href=\"https:\/\/limetech.co\/what-is-agile-mobile-app-development\/\">agile<\/a> is the ability to adjust goals and adapt approaches throughout the course of a project. In this way, the team functions like an independent organism, learning from its environment and adjusting its behavior as it evolves. This helps ensure an outcome that suits the current business environment, especially when the environment itself is constantly in flux.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the benefits of the agile approach were apparent in the software world, other industries took notice. Agile spread to mainstream companies, even beyond the parameters of engineering. Today, even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevedenning\/2020\/09\/29\/who-says-the-government-cant-be-agile\/?sh=334d3cce3a6c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government agencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are incorporating elements of agile into their work practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Everything is agile<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The influence of agile is everywhere. Large manufacturers now utilize lean manufacturing practices (influenced by agile, as well as just-in-time production). Companies in many industries now describe their physical workspaces as agile, and encourage employees to work from different locations throughout the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project managers, in turn, can choose from a wide range of agile methodologies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/limetech.co\/a-glossary-of-agile-software-development-terminology-a-to-z\/\">scrum, lean, and kanban<\/a>. Each method has spawned its own realm of training programs and devoted followers. This whole realm is sometimes sarcastically called the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/martinfowler.com\/articles\/agile-aus-2018.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agile industrial complex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The embrace of agile has even moved beyond the bounds of work. Perhaps you\u2019ve heard of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/agilemodeling.com\/essays\/agileArchitecture.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Agile architecture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/bruce_feiler_agile_programming_for_your_family\/transcript?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agile parenting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of companies were forced to pivot to remote work, rapidly close and re-open, or rewrite their business model. Adapt or die became less a rallying cry and more a truism. And agile became the buzzword of choice throughout the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11881 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/tjarb.com\/limetech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/yitzhak-rodriguez-sv1m5Y0qJOI-unsplash-e1635887885417-300x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" \/>Navigating a shifting world<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/limetech.co\/approach\/\">Agile<\/a> is here to stay. What remains to be seen is whether it will stay vital or become entrenched and enamored with its own systems. Seemingly, a method so responsive to change will continue to evolve and positively influence all kinds of industries, even the more traditional or archaic ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experience of conducting business in the throes of a global pandemic has schooled us all. And likely we have even greater challenges in store. As global warming and rapid tech innovation amplify the forces of change, our rate of adaptation must keep pace.
